Samsung launches new GDDR7 memory

Samsung just unveiled its Graphics Double Data Rate 7, or GDDR7, graphics chip, which promises industry-leading speeds and better efficiency. Their first partners will receive the chip later this year for testing.

According to Neowin, Samsung says the new GDDR7 memory module (16 Gb or 2 GB per chip) improves bandwidth by up to 40%, delivering impressive speeds of 1.5 TB/s and 32 Gbps per pin. For comparison, the GDDR6 chip that Samsung announced last year only hit 1.1 TB/s

The company was able to improve the speed thanks to Pulse Amplitude Modulation-3 (PAM3) signaling method instead of the Non-Return to Zero (NRZ) in the previous generation. Samsung claims PAM3 provides 50% more data than NRZ in the same signal transmission cycle.

In addition to improving speed and enhancing performance, Samsung’s GDDR7 memory also reduces power consumption and delivers a 20% improvement in efficiency by using “power-saving design technology optimized for high-speed operations”. Manufacturers will also have the option of equipping their devices with low-voltage memory, although at this time there is no exact voltage data from Samsung.

Samsung says its GDDR7 memory features a highly conductive epoxy molding compound (EMC) to improve heat dissipation and ensure consistent performance during intensive high-speed operations. With GDDR6 memory chips said to be hot when operating, GDDR7 promises to improve in this respect.

“Our GDDR7 DRAM will help enhance user experience in areas where outstanding graphics performance is required, such as workstations, PCs, and game consoles, and is expected to expand into future applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC) and automotive,” Samsung said
