The UK gaming industry is planning to limit the reach of loot box mechanics in video games.
According to VGC, the UK gaming industry has revealed plans to restrict loot box access to players under the age of 18. New restrictions are proposed by the Technical Working Group.
The UK’s creative industry minister, John Whittingdale, said the new scheme was launched as a way to protect children and adults from the harms associated with loot boxes
In the plan, the first thing to do is to strengthen parental control for players under the age of 18 to limit the actions of buying loot boxes. The industry ministry will run an information campaign to share best practices with parents and guardians, who may not be as knowledgeable about loot boxes in the game.
In addition, game companies also need to detail the winning probability of the loot packages before purchasing. This has happened in some games, such as the FIFA Ultimate Team popular. Progress on this new limited plan will be reviewed for 1 year.
Last year, the UK government said the game industry had to go to great lengths to protect vulnerable players from loot boxes. At the same time, they will not hesitate to review the law if the companies do not put in place enough measures to keep players safe
