The European Union wants to make handheld game consoles use removable batteries under new regulations by 2027.

Consoles like the Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, and Asus Rog Ally won’t be affected by the rule, but their upcoming versions will be forced to be redesigned under the new rule

In addition, the Council of the European Union has adopted a new regulation that governs the entire life cycle of batteries, from production, to reuse, to recycling; helping batteries to remain “safe, sustainable and competitive”.What the EU is aiming for for handheld game consoles is related to the right to repair for end users, instead of having to bring the faulty battery to a service center, they can easily change the battery at home without having to rely on specialized tools.

In addition, the upcoming 4-year period will give manufacturers enough time to adapt and redesign product internals to switch to using removable batteries. They will also be required to provide detailed user manuals and safety instructions for ease of disassembly
