Huawei and Ericsson have just signed a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement covering standards: 3GPP, ITU, IEEE, and IETF for 3G, 4G, and 5G mobile technologies.
The agreement allows the two sides to trade in consumer and network infrastructure equipment, as well as global access to each other’s portfolio of standardized, licensed technologies.
Mr. Alan Fan, Head of Intellectual Property at Huawei said: “We are delighted to have reached a long-term global patent cross-license agreement with Ericsson. As strong contributors, As part of the Standard Essential Patents (SEP) portfolio for mobile telecommunications, Huawei and Ericsson both recognize the value of each other’s intellectual property. a stronger patent environment, and at the same time demonstrating the commitment of both partners to promoting respect and proper protection of intellectual property rights”.
For the past 20 years, Huawei has been a mainstream ICT standards provider, covering the areas of mobile technology, Wi-Fi, and multimedia data encryption. In 2022, Huawei topped the European Patent Office’s ranking of patent applications with 4,504 applications.
As the owner and implementer of standard essential patents (SEPs), Huawei has always sought a balance in licensing. Through the agreement, Huawei and Ericsson will both be awarded and receive access to each other’s key technologies.
