Samsung is reportedly planning to enhance the capabilities of its Bixby voice assistant with synthetic artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Bixby was launched in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 smartphone and has since been integrated into a range of Samsung devices, from smartwatches to home appliances. While Bixby offers features such as live translation and restaurant recommendations, it is less conversational and requires users to ask specific questions to receive feedback.

Samsung is now looking to incorporate generative AI into Bixby, similar to ChatGPT and its competitors. Generative AI allows users to generate responses in text, images, and even videos, resulting in more natural conversations. The company hopes that this will make Bixby smarter and more appealing to users.

Samsung’s focus on AI comes at a time when investors are closely watching Apple’s AI advancements. Apple is expected to introduce new AI features on its products at WWDC 2024 next June. In response, Samsung is working hard to equip its devices with more advanced AI features, including rolling out Galaxy AI to the latest Galaxy S24 series.

Vice President of Samsung’s mobile business, Won-joon Choi, stated that the company is redefining the role of Bixby to support Samsung products within its ecosystem. While Mr. Choi did not provide a timeline for when Bixby might receive generative AI features, he is confident that this addition will facilitate more natural conversations and create a smarter interface for users.
