The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first app capable of controlling a user’s insulin pump for iOS.

According to AppleInsider, the t:connet app can be used in conjunction with the t:slim X2 insulin pump from Tandem Diabetes Care. The FDA-approved version allows users to program and cancel insulin injection requests through the convenience of their compatible smartphone.

Reportedly, the t:connect app previously allowed users to view insulin pump information on their iPhones. This app displays glucose trends over the past 24 hours, pump status changes, and insulin therapy data. The app requires iOS 14 or later and is currently compatible with the t: slim X2 insulin pump.

Those curious about Tandem Diabetes’s insulin pump system are encouraged to download an app called t:simulator. This is an app that allows users to experience the touch interface of Tandem Diabetes’s t:slim X2 insulin pump and preview the functions of the t:connect companion app.

An insulin pump is a small wearable device that delivers insulin into the patient’s body. This is an alternative to regular insulin injections. Some insulin pumps will also monitor the patient’s blood sugar, showing blood sugar in real-time, so the patient can give himself or herself insulin.
