This is confirmed by Microsoft in the latest Microsoft Edge support document when it says that the browser now offers 5 GB of free VPN data.
However, users should remember, Edge VPN requires signing in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft said that the use of this account is to access the Microsoft Edge Secure Network to track the amount of data used each month. This data will be provided with 5 GB for free and will require payment when the limit is reached. The company asserts that the user’s account identity will never be shared with the service provider (Cloudflare) when connecting to the Secure Network.
In addition, using a Microsoft account to sign in to the browser will also enable synchronization, where the user’s browsing data will be available across all signed-in versions of Microsoft Edge. Users can also synchronize browsing history, favorites, settings, form-fill data, passwords, extensions, open tabs, and collections.
It is also important to note that Edge VPN is not a solution that always works. Microsoft positions it as an added security measure when users visit an unsecured HTTP website or connect to an open Wi-Fi network. Therefore, a dedicated VPN service with unlimited traffic would be a much better choice if 5 GB is too little or if the user wants to use a VPN for streaming services on Microsoft Edge.
